The Olympics may be over, but we can learn a lot from the past two weeks….
I don’t think I was alone in being sceptical about the Olympics – before the Games started I thought it was going to be a lot of expense and disruption for London, with little benefit. But I’m happy to admit I was wrong. I think it has been fantastic for London. The atmosphere has been amazing and I believe the organisers have ‘done us proud’ and given us a Games – and a City – of which we can all be proud.
Whether or not you agree with me, there are some key things that all business owners can learn from what we have seen in the last two weeks. The first is that planning is the key to successs. The organisers have been planning the Games for 7 years. Many of the athletes have been planning their performance at the Games for much, much longer. An amazing event like that simply doesn’t happen without planning.
What can you take from this? Well, how much time have you spent planning your business growth and goals in the last 7 years? Or in the last 7 weeks? If the answer is ‘not much’ then you can’t expect to have the kind of success we have seen for organisers and athletes alike in the past two weeks. So maybe it’s time to re-evaluate how much time you spend on planning your success…..?
The other thing we have seen in abundance in the last two weeks is focus. You’ll have seen it on the faces of the athletes, and the coaches and support teams behind them. Focus is what helps you achieve your goals – but it must be focus on the right things. As well as focusing on the right strategies, you must focus on working ON your business, not just IN your business.
If you are struggling to find time for planning, or finding it hard to focus on your business, maybe it’s time you got some help? After all, the medal winners of the last two weeks didn’t achieve all that on their own. They all had coaches and trainers to help them identify the areas they needed to work on to acheive their goals, to train harder, to focus, and ultimately to achieve their goal of achieving gold. Imagine what you could do if you had someone to help you do all that in your business. Someone to help you work out what to do, to show you how to do it, and to keep you on track to make sure you get it done…..
If you are ready to go for gold in your business, then the first step is to identify what ‘gold’ means for you, and then make sure you have in place whatever you need to help you achieve it.
